Folio shooting

Forgive the topsy turvy posting of the last few weeks, I’ve had to combine holidays, family emergencies/commitments and work related writings which all zap my writing time and energy, my apologies.

Here we are though with another NP musings, for this blog I’ve been reflecting on the work produced while I was working as a photographer, a career that started roughly in 1990 and worked its way through to about 2020 say. Looking at the work I realise that a lot of it was produced to a very strict criteria of client, time and limitations. These are not always visible in the image and can often be mistaken for something else entirely so I’m aiming to get rid of this work and replace with something more in keeping.

Thinking about folio and image making for folios there are different criteria for each stage as you go through photography:

Beginning, middle and end.

Establishing, maintaining and conclusion.

Building a folio for each of these stages is quite an interesting exercise as I think they (folios) serve many different purposes, so fitting imagery in with these criteria is a good reflection exercise.

The collection of work I’m looking at creating now is for the latter stages of my career where I’ve shot almost everything, but I’ve not shot everything I want to, I need some new images that will complement and enhance the work that’s already in there. A creation of an opus possibly?

To do this I need to be out shooting and as I realise that the commercial side is a little gone now, think I’ve been out of the game for too many years and with this current climate I don’t want to stop someone else’s income by working for a nominal fee for my folio work (never ever work for free. Ever.) Plus with everything that I have going on then I’m not sure I have that much time to chase jobs never mind time to do them if I was successful ! Wow just the act of saying that kinda goes against everything the old NP way of working was. I always thought got you places via the “you must always be available for work, you must never turn down stuff” etc etc. Hmm interesting..

Anyway back to the point, I need to shoot content that accurately places what NathanPhoto was and is going forward. To that end I’m looking for collaborators to engage with and produce some work that we can both use. Here’s the ShoutOut. I’m looking for any collaborators who would like to do some photographic work, I’m mainly looking to shoot:

·      Portraiture any sort be it headshots, profiles, environmental etc.

·      Short term Documentary type work. Looking to make some issue-based work. What issues should I be looking at?

Of course, I’m always open to other types of work depending on what it is and what I can fit in so please do give me a shout and we can talk about it.

Now blogs need images like politicians need votes so thought I’d do a set of two images one of these for me is a definite inclusion in the folio the other is not, which is which?

One is a new topographical-esque image of Stockport, the other is an image of the queen herself performing in Manchester.

Which one, do you think, is which?

Thank you for reading.
